Most restaurant marketing advice is a list of 50 ideas. A restaurant owner needs the five that bring orders, in the right order, at a budget that makes sense for one location. This guide is built from campaigns we run for food businesses, including a caterer whose 14-month ledger we publish, and it covers both Indian cities and Dubai.
The Short Answer
For a single-location restaurant, cloud kitchen or caterer, digital marketing that works comes down to five things, in this order:
1. Google Business Profile
Where "near me" diners decide, before they ever see your website
2. Search ads on hungry searches
"Biryani near me", "catering for 100 people": people ready to order now
3. Instagram for discovery
Reels of the food and the room, with a clear way to order or book
4. A direct order channel
WhatsApp or your own ordering page, so repeat orders skip the commission
The fifth is bringing people back: a WhatsApp or email list of past customers, used for new dishes and festival menus. It is the cheapest order you will ever get.
Start With Google Business Profile
For restaurants, the Google Maps listing does more selling than the website. Fill in every field: categories, menu, hours (including holidays), photos of real dishes, and a steady flow of reviews. Reply to every review, good and bad, because people read the replies.
Two habits make the biggest difference: post new photos every week, and ask every happy table or delivery customer for a review the same day, with a short link. A listing with fresh photos and recent reviews beats a better restaurant with a neglected one.
Google Ads for Restaurants and Caterers
Search ads work best for food businesses when the search shows intent to order: "party orders near me", "wedding caterers in Bangalore", "best shawarma Al Barsha". Generic searches like "restaurant" waste money. Point each ad at a page that matches it, with the menu, prices and a one-tap WhatsApp button.
Budgets that work in our accounts:
| Business | India (ad spend / month) | Dubai (ad spend / month) |
|---|---|---|
| Single-location restaurant or cloud kitchen | From ₹15,000 | From AED 3,000 |
| Caterer chasing weddings and events | ₹19,000 – ₹29,000 (our caterer's range) | AED 5,000+ in event season |
Clicks cost several times more in Dubai than in India, but order values are higher too, so the maths can still work. To see what your budget buys before you spend it, try our free Google Ads budget calculator; it has typical click costs for catering in both markets.
Real numbers, not a mockup: Sri Lakshmi Caterers in Bangalore spent ₹6.3 lakh over 14 months on Google Ads and SEO and booked ₹88.3 lakh in confirmed orders from 1,000+ tracked enquiries. Every month's spend and revenue is in the case study.
Instagram and Meta Ads
Instagram is where people discover a place to try; Google is where they look for one to order from now. Use Instagram for short Reels of the food being made and served, the room on a busy night, and customers' own posts, reshared with permission. Small Meta ad budgets that promote your best Reels to people within delivery range, or to people who visited your website, usually beat boosting random posts.
Every post and ad needs one clear next step: order on WhatsApp, book a table, or see the menu. "Link in bio" with nothing behind it loses most of the people you paid to reach.
Get Repeat Orders Without the Commission
Delivery apps are good for being discovered and expensive for repeat customers, because the platform takes a commission on every order, including from people who already know you. Commissions on the major apps are commonly reported at a fifth to a third of the order value, so check your own contract.
The fix is a direct channel for regulars: a WhatsApp Business number with a menu catalogue, or a simple ordering page on your own website, and a reason to use it (a small discount or a free side for ordering direct). Keep the apps for new customers; move your regulars to your own channel.
Dubai: What Is Different
- Language: many diners search in Arabic, and Arabic results are often less competitive. An Arabic menu page and Arabic Google Business Profile posts can rank faster than their English twins.
- Area matters: searches are hyper-local ("JLT", "Al Barsha", "Deira"), so target the areas you actually deliver to, not all of Dubai.
- Higher budgets, higher order values: plan from AED 3,000 a month in ad spend for one location, and track orders, not just clicks, so you know the spend is paying.
We run this for food businesses in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi from Chennai, priced in dirhams; see our restaurant marketing in Dubai page.
Ten Restaurant Marketing Ideas That Earn Their Cost
- Ask for a review on WhatsApp the same day as every order.
- Post new dish photos on Google Business Profile every week.
- Run search ads only on order-intent searches, never on "restaurant".
- Build one landing page per offer: party orders, office lunches, wedding catering.
- Put a one-tap WhatsApp order button on every page.
- Film one Reel a week of something being cooked.
- Give regulars a reason to order direct instead of through the apps.
- Send festival and seasonal menus to your past customers.
- Track every enquiry to its source: ads, Google Maps, Instagram, walk-in.
- Review the numbers monthly and move money to what produced orders.
The last two are what separate restaurants that grow from restaurants that just spend. If you want help setting it up, send us your menu on WhatsApp and we will tell you honestly what your first three months should look like.
